Koning Willem I is named after King Willem the first of the Netherlands. In 1838, he decided by royal decree to build the first railways in the Netherlands. In 1839, the first steam powered railway was opened between Amsterdam and Haarlem.
By naming a station after him, Rijndam honors King Willem the first for one of the most important events in Dutch railway history.
From its opening in 2018, line M2 services the station. In 2020, line M4 takes over from line M2.
