The VT98 Schienenbus (Railbus) is a German train originating in the 1950's, based on a few years older train, the VT95. Its main purpose was to reduce costs on local railway lines which did not have enough passenger traffic to warrant investing in larger mainline diesel trains. This way, closure of many small railways could be prevented, giving these trains the nickname "Nebenbahnretter" (sideline saviour).
They were also used to save on locomotives, as they where strong enough to also take along a few freight wagons (hence a separate diesel locomotive on these lines was not needed).
These trains can still be found with many museum organisations, including the ZLSM in the southeast of the Netherlands.
Operations in the simulator
There are four variations in the package; the VT98 Triebwagen (Motorcar), VB98 Beiwagen (trailercar), VB98D Beiwagen (trailercar with bagage compartment) and the VS98 Steuerwagen (trailercar with bagage compartment and driver position). A typical train would be three cars, consisting of a motorcar, trailercar, and drivercar.
Recommended routes in Metrosimulator for this train:
- Simvliet: Simvliet Centraal - Simvliet Haven
- Rijndam 2022: Zeeburg - Zeeburg Haven
- Rijndam Railways 2022: Rijndam Centraal - Denia
Driving Instructions
1. Enter the driver position in the direction of travel (click on the prefered end of the vehicle).
2. Open the driver desk cover Shift+X
3. Activate the cab Ctrl+F4
4. Activate the diesel engine Ctrl+E
5. When you have a green signal, close the doors (D) and depart!
When changing driving directions, you may leave the engines 'on' when shutting of the cab. Don't forget to close the driver desk cover when you leave the cab (Shift+X)!

Activity codes
You can place a train in your acitivity by using the following lines in your ACT file:
<train pack="VT98" file="VT98.xml"/>
VB98 motorcar
<train pack="VT98" file="VB98.xml"/>
VB98 Trailercar
<train pack="VT98" file="VB98D.xml"/>
VB98 Trailercar with bagagecompartment
<train pack="VT98" file="VS98.xml"/>
VS98 Trailercar with bagagecompartment and driver position
Example to put in your ACT file:
<consist start="ZB1a"> <train pack="VT98" file="VT98.xml"><cab id="0" mycontrol="true" /></train> <train pack="VT98" file="VB98.xml"/> <train pack="VT98" file="VS98.xml"/> </consist>
Special notes
- The train has been fitted with ATB-E (ATB "Eenvoudig", simple version) in order to be usable on the Rijndam en Simvliet railway networks. This system enforces maximum speed, but does so in the background (so no deadmen-switch buzzer every 30 seconds). The speedometer in the model has however been fitted with a little red pointer on the outside edge, to show for which speed the system recieves a signal. If no signal is recieved (for example; you are not on a track with ATB trainprotection), then it will by default enforce a maximum speed of 40 km/h.
- The train is 3 meters wide. It will NOT fit along metro platforms. So keep to the railway lines.
- This train does not have door protection; you can drive with the doors open (only; doors can not be opened while the vehicle is in motion).
