The NS Class 6400 is a type of Bo-Bo diesel-electric freight locomotive. 120 were built (96 are available in the simulator) by MaK and ABB between 1988 and 1994 for Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). They were intended to replace the older 2200 and 2400 series locomotives for freight traffic all over the Netherlands.
The locomotive can run in multiple traction with other 6400 locomotives. Designed for up to 4 locomotives working together, in practice up to 3 locomotives were used to pull heavy iron ore / coal trains (between the Maasvlakte, at the port of Rotterdam, and the German border at Venlo) until that route was taken over my electric locomotives.
The locomotives can also be controled by remote control. This feature is used for shunting with single person operation (a picture of the remote control box can be found on the Dutch Wikipedia page listed below), for example where the train needs to be pushed into a siding; the driver can take the remote control and drive the train standing on the freightcar at the end of the train.
Nearly all locomotives have a name, situated on the outside above the driver position. A full list of these names can be found on the Dutch Wikipedia page listed below. In the simulator, a few extra names have been added for some of the locomotives which do not have a name in the list.
In the simulator
- You can make a repaint to create your own livery. You can find the texture file under "Data\MaK_DE_6400\Textures".
- The DB livery and the repaintable locomotive have the ERTMS train protection system installed (so they can be used in the Channel Tunnel section on the Rijndam network). For this, locomotive numbers 6421-6442 are available.
This locomotive is not included in the RijndamRail package; it is a separate download (on this page).
Train operation keys
- Ctrl+F4 / Shift+F4 – Activate/deactivate driver position
- Ctrl+E / Shift+E – Activate/deactivate diesel engine
- Shift+X – Open/close driver door on the left of the driver position (the other door can be activated from the other driver position)
- Ctrl+X – Rotate the driver chair on the other side (incase a second person is on board, who doesn't want to face backwards)
- [ / ] – Activate/deactivate corner lights
- \ – Activate/deactivate danger lightsignal (front and closing lights both on at the same time, and corner lights activated)
