When in 1997, The RET Rotterdam Metro needed a New Type of trains to operate on the Noord-South Lijn and Oost-West Lijn when the [[SG2]] Fleet was operating on Marconiplein to Ommoond and Zevenkamp and not enough Trains on the Capelseburg to Capelle a/d Ijssel due to the [[SG2]] Operating on the Eramuslijn between Centraal Station and Spijkenese and the MG2 Fleet is almost 30 years old since service since 1968 on the Noord-South Lijn to Replace the [[MG2]] Sets.

The Design is Based on Bombardier Flexity Swift and City Shift, They are length 30.5 Meters (30.65 Meters on sets 5343-5363) and They have Side Destination Blinds (DMI on Sets 5343-5363) and have AC Motors (Compare with the DC Motors used on the MG2 Sets).

These Sets Replaced the MG2 Sets (5001-5027, 5051-5066, 5101-5126, 5151-5152) From 1999 to 2003 on the Eramuslijn.

The MG2/1 Sets (5301 and 5302) enter Service on the Eramuslijn in 1997 and the Calandlijn in 1998.

In 2013, MG2/1 set 5353 was show in the New RET Livery which was Similar to the SG3 Sets
In 2014, The RET Livery was replaced with R-net With RET Livery.
The MG2/1 and SG2/1 Sets are receiving the Midlife Revision which earlier was the Similar RET Livery on the SG3 Sets but These were Dropped for the new RET and R-NET Livery on Sets 5301, 5303-5305, 5311, 5313, 5315-5317, 5322, 5327, 5331, 5333, 5336, 5339-5340, 5346-5347, 5350, 5353, 5360-5363.
