Line M5 is a metro line in Rijndam that runs on exceptional occasions only, between Transferium Rijndijk and Denia, a small town at the south of Rijndam.

Before 2018 and the opening of Transferium Rijndijk, this line was a short metric railway who was going to Rijndam Zuid. It’s wasn't electrified and only a few trains ran on this line.
In 2018, with the extension of line M2 from Centraal Station to Transferium Rijndijk, this line was rebuilt and deviated to reach the station, in order to facilitate interchanges.
Due to its local layout (single track, shorter 90m platforms, and lower maximum speeds) it was decided not to extend line M2 further (as that would mean reducing the maximum train length on line M2), but to run it as a separate line. When M4 took over the Transferium branch from line M2 in 2020, this was not changed.
At Transferium Rijndijk, cross platform interchange is provided between line M4 and M5.

In 2020, the line was deleted, replaced by a tram (the line T3), with a new stop: Denia Spoorplein. But, two years after, in 2022, T3 was deviated to Garenmarkt with a new itinerary. Consequently, M5 was reborn and run now on its previous itinerary. However, due to Denia Spoorplein was never equipped with high platform, the M5 trains dosen’t stop at this station.

The terminus "Denia" is inspired on the real terminus station of the city Dénia in Spain, and the end of the narrow gauge diesel railway Benidorm-Denia, which is part of the Alicante lightrail network (as line L9).

Trivia

  • On Rijndam 2016, due to tracks works, the city center was served by a bidirectional circular line, which had the number M5. Today, this service can be operated but doesn't have number.
  • On Rijndam 2020 to operate the M5 line in your activities, you have to use the “Rijndam2020.ctd” file. If you prefer operate T3, use “Rijndam2020_TD.ctd” (with “TD” for “Tram Denia”).
  • Even if the railway connection to Rijndam Zuid was demolished, some traces of the past of the line remains present. Be aware!
