ARI is the automatic train protection system in the simulator used in the Essim tramtunnel. It is supported by the Avenio, RegioCitadis and GTL trams. Unlike other systems ARI does not provide continuous protection, it only intervenes when approaching or passing a signal at a too high speed. It does not include cab signalling, the driver has to rely on speed signs and light signals to prevent an intervention.

Light signals

Aspect Meaning Speed
Red Stop. 30m before the signal the speed needs to be below 35km/h.
Yellow Prepare to stop. This signal may be passed at local speed, prepare to stop at next signal.
Yellow + number Prepare to stop. This signal may be passed at indicated speed, prepare to stop at next signal.
Double yellow Drive on sight into occupied platform. Signal may be passed at local speed, stop at marker halfway the platform.
Double yellow + number Drive on sight into occupied platform. Signal may be passed at indicated speed, stop at marker halfway the platform.
Green Proceed. Signal may be passed at local speed.
Green + number Proceed. Signal may be passed at indicated speed, speed may be increased to local speed at next speed sign.
Green + blinking number Reduce speed. Signal may be passed at local speed, reduce speed to indicated speed before the next signal.

It should be noted that speed restrictions may not always be announced by a signal or sign, the driver is expected to have route knowledge.

Train protection

When overspeeding ARI may intervene by activating the emergency brake of the tram. After the tram has come to a stop, the override key (by default Ctrl+Tab) needs to be pressed to release the brakes. This override key should also be used when authorised to pass a signal at danger to prevent an intervention.
