Rijndam

Rijndam is a fictional city in Dutch style (made by Sjoerd Ydema), located along the river Rhine, with a metro network inspired by several different Dutch and non-Dutch metro networks.

There are seven versions of the Rijndam network;

Network information

Lines

The network has two lines:

  • Line M1: Molenwijk - Station Westplein
  • Line M2: Noorderpoort - Ketelplein

The line numbers are for administration purposes only; these are not shown on the vehicles.

Depots

The network has one depot located at Molenwijk.
Also there is a small stabling track at Noorderpoort which fits one full-length metro, to be used for the first service out of Noorderpoort in the morning.

Lines

Line M1

Line M1 runs above ground from Molenwijk to Simvlietlaan and from Brielselaan to Station Westplein. Between Simvlietlaan and Brielselaan, line M1 runs underground.
Line M1 was the first line build in Rijndam. It started with the section between Molenwijk and the Central Station, and was later extended to Station Westplein on the other side of the city.

Destination codes:
D - Molenwijk Depot
M - Molenwijk
C - Central Station
S - Station Westplein
W - Westpoort

Line M2

Line M2 runs underground from Noorderpoort to Westpoort. After Westpoort, the line continues above ground to Station Westplein and Ketelplein. At Station Westplein, metro's switch to Sneltram mode for the last part to Ketelplein.
A later extension towards Monument, trough the business district, is being planned.

Line M2 was the second line build in Rijndam. It connects the northern side of the city center to the trainstation at Westplein and the domestic area beyond the station. At Noorderpoort, a short walk connects you to Rijndam Noorderpoort train station, startingpoint of railwaylines to Noordvliet, Rijnwoude and the airport.

The section between Station Westplein and Ketelplein was build as Sneltram system, as this made same level crossings with motorized traffic possible. However, this puts a limiting factor on the metro network's exploitation; the MG2 trains used on line M1 can not run on the sneltram section, as they do not have pantographs for overhead power supply.
(Incidental use of the MG2 trains on the sneltram section is possible, as they can be used coupled to SG2 trains, and a pantograph indicator is present in the cab.)

Destination codes:
K - Ketelplein
S - Station Westplein
W - Westpoort
I - Museumkwartier
P - Noorderpoort
O - Noorderpoort track 3 (in order to continue to Noorderpoort stabling track)

Other locations

Depot Molenwijk

Depot Molenwijk is the main depot on the network. It is situated near the terminus Molenwijk at line M1. It has 8 sidings for stabling metro trains, a 4-track maintenance facility, a track for testing trains, and a mainline railway connection for receiving or sending cargo. This depot is not complete yet; as Rijndam is planning on extending it's metro network (including a full city center loop), the depot is being modified to accommodate more rolling stock.

Freightyard Bergenseweg

Freightyard Bergenseweg is located near Bergenseweg metro station, connected to the metro network at Station Westplein. It is used by the national railways to supply cargo to the Rijndam area, and to allow for freight interchange between the railways and ships on the Rhine river.

It has a connection to the metro network which is incidentally used for freight transport via the metro network (during night hours, using the maintenance diesel locomotives).
The Rijndam city council has proposed using freight metro's to resupply stores in the city centre, but this proposal was rejected as this would interfere with regular passenger services, and underground sidings with freight platforms are too expensive.

Railwaylines

The railwaylines from Rijndam Noorderpoort trainstation to Noordvliet, Rijnwoude, Panbos and the Rijndam Airport (which are part of the metro network in Rijndam 2006/2018/2020) are present in the network. These lines are equipped with Dutch railway signals and ATB-EG security.

Destination codes:
R - Rijndam Noorderpoort
F - Rijndam Noord
V - Noordvliet
E - Rijnwoude Dorp
B - Panbos
A - Rijndam Airport

Railwaylines signals and security

The railway lines in the Rijndam network are equiped with Dutch railway signals and ATB-EG security.

The signs along the tracks are mostly the same as the signs used on the metro network, but there are a few differences. For example, the numbers on the blue stop signs are in carriages of train length instead of the number of trainsets (a two-part train will stop at stop sign 2 on the railway network, where a MG2/SG2 metro will stop at stopsign 1 on the metro network).

The following signals are being used to provide information on track clearance and speed limits;

Seinen.png

  • Green:                 Proceed at local maximum speed.
  • Green flashing:  Proceed at a maximum of 40 km/h. If the number 6 is displayed below the light, proceed at 60 km/h.
  • Yellow + 4:         Slow down to 40 km/h. The next signal will not be red, but you must have slowed to 40 km/h before passing it.
  • Yellow + 6:         Slow down to 60 km/h. The next signal will not be red, but you must have slowed to 60 km/h before passing it.
  • Yellow:               Slow down to 40 km/h and be prepared to stop at the next signal.
  • Yellow flashing: Drive on sight; you are entering a track which is already occupied (or outside the controlled area). Pass at a maximum of 40 km/h, and be prepared to stop at any time.
  • Red:                   Stop.

The signals are backed up by ATB-EG security, controlling the maximum speed on the line. The signals are relayed to the trains by using the tracks to create a series of electromagnetic pulses, which are recognised by the equipment on board the trains. The ATB-EG system controlls the maximum speeds 40, 60, 80 and 130 km/h.
However, the main rule remains "when more then one speed indication is given, the most restrictive one must be followed". So when signs along the track tell you the maximum speed is 100 km/h, and the ATB tells you 130, then you must keep to 100 km/h.

The metro rolling stock will display (and enforce) the highest speed they can at or below the speed they receive from the ATB-EG; for example, if the ATB-EG sends out "130 km/h", the SG3 rolling stock will display "100", and the Bursa 5200's will display "80".
