Post by Glory5398 »

Its weird how the Trams on the road has like a full on catenary cause in france they just have wires for the trams (unless this the type of wires they have in the netherlands) but if u guys are gonna add like a french map any time soon can it just be wires than like a catenary not a problem for me tho is just weird for me to see those type of wires when im driving a french tram on the roads

It's different but similar around the world. In the US and Canada, older light rail systems uses trolley wire when street running or traveling in a shared RoW with cars such as a median or transit lane while in the rapid transit corridor portion of the route uses catenary OCS. New systems and expansions to older ones just use an OCS throughout the entire route. Newer systems are also beginning to use overhead conductor rail for tunnels.

^ Yes, Los Angeles is one of these mass transit systems.

In the simulator some things things are simplified to reduce development time. Tram wires can be extremely complex in reality, requiring a lot of detail. In Rotterdam different constructions are used, some tracks use a catenary system with 2 lines and cross wires between them, other tracks have just a single wire, and then there are some tracks where they do use two wires above each other but there are no connecting vertical wires between them. Systems are even mixed within at intersections, where a two-wire catenary system is used on the track going straight and a single wire is used for the tracks turning right.

The two-wire system is mainly used where you would want the masts to hold up the system to be spaced further apart (and therefore, is used more often on long straight sections).
With a single wire, you need the connection points to hold it up to be placed closer together. So it is pretty much an efficiency issue.

By the way.... On the Toronto map, only the single wire variant is used.
On the Rijndam map, the two-wire variant is used as the single wire system had not been created in the simulator yet.
