Rijndam is a fictional city in Dutch style (made by Sjoerd Ydema), located along the river Rhine, with a metro network inspired by several different Dutch and non-Dutch metro networks.
There are six versions of the Rijndam network:

Line M1 runs above ground from Molenwijk to Simvlietlaan and from Nobelplein to Panbos. Between Simvlietlaan and Nobelplein, line M1 runs underground.
The section from Nobelplein to Panbos was once a local railwayline, starting at a station at Rijndam Noorderpoort. A few years ago, the Rijndam city council has decided to connect this railway to the metro network. This was done to eliminate the need for passenger interchange, to increase the frequency of services on the line, and to allow for the demolition and redevelopment of the site of the former train station.
Line M2 runs underground from Central Station to Westpoort. After Westpoort, the line continues above ground to Station Westplein. At Station Westplein, metro's switch to Sneltram mode for the last part to Monument.
Line M3 runs underground from Central Station to Westpoort. After Westpoort, the line continues above ground to Station Westplein and Rijnland Ziekenhuis (Hospital). At Station Westplein, metro's switch to Sneltram mode for the last part to Rijnland Hospital.
Line M4 connects the city with Rijndam Airport. It runs above ground from Transferium Rijndijk to Koning Willem I, then underground to Noorderpoort, and then continues above ground to Rijndam Airport. Shortly before reaching the airport, the line returns underground, to terminate under the Airport terminal building containing terminals 1,2 and 3 (passengers for Terminal 4 can change here for a shuttle service).
As with line M1, the section outside of the city after Noorderpoort uses a converted railway line. It used to have overhead wires and ZUB train protection, but (in 2020) the line was converted to 3rd rail and ATB in order to facilitate to use of rolling stock without pantograph on line M4.
Line M4 has its own depot at the airport, using the site of a former underground cargo terminal.
Line M5 runs entirely above ground from Transferium Rijndijk to Denia, a small town south of Rijndam. It is a short single track line with two intermediate stations (Lierdijk and Westwoud). The line pre-dates the Rijndam metro network as a short railway diesel powered branch, connecting several small towns. It was electrified (overhead whires) and became part of the metro network when line M2 was extended to Transferium Rijndijk in 2018. The railway connection was severed, but its remains are still present.
Due to its local layout (single track, shorter 90m platforms, and lower maximum speeds) it was decided not to extend line M2 further (as that would mean reducing the maximum train length on line M2), but to run it as a separate line. When M4 took over the Transferium branch from line M2 in 2020, this was not changed. At Transferium Rijndijk, cross platform interchange is provided between line M4 and M5.
The terminus "Denia" is inspired on the real terminus station of the city of Dénia in Spain, and the end of the narrow gauge diesel railway Benidorm-Denia, which is part of the Alicante lightrail network (as line L9). It features the same track layout as the real station, except it has three platform tracks instead of four, and the surrounding road layout is also resembles (but is not an exact copy of) the real situation around the station.
Line M6 runs mostly underground. Only Janeway Park (named after captain Kathryn Janeway, of the starship USS Voyager) is in the open air, yet not entirely on the surface. At Stadhuis, Burcht and Nationale Opera, passengers can interchange to/from other lines on the metro network. At Station Blaak, passengers can interchange with RijndamRail local train services.
Line M7 is a London Underground tube-style single track line which runs between Rijndam Megastores and Noorderpoort. It was created to be used by the London Underground 1973 stock train, available since Metrosimulator 3.14. The line has it's own smal depot at Rijndam Megsatores, where two 3-car units can be stabled next to each other. Coupling a full-length (6-car) train can not be done inside the depot; this must be done along the station platform.
The metro transport museum is located at the Wagenmakerstraat in Noordvliet, at the end of a old freight branch off the Rijndam - Panbos line. Here, a small depot has been build in order to preserve, maintain and display the historic metro trains. The line connecting the museum to the nearby Noordvliet station (on line M1) has been converted for use by these old metro trains; it has 3rd rail power supply and both ATB and ZUB train protection.
Version 1.3: A meter gauge line has been added to 's Gravendijk, under Spanish signalling, for use by the FGV diesel train. Also, the connection to Noordvliet is dual gauge (1435mm and 1000mm) in this version.
The Airport Shuttleservice is a short line connecting the airport terminals with several parking lots near the airport. It is operated by the Airport Authority, separate from the Rijndam metro network. The line is provided as a free service to passengers. At Rijndam Airport Terminals 1-3 passengers can transfer to/from the Rijndam Metro network, line M4.
It is a single track line, equipped with ATB train protection. The platforms are shorter then those on the Rijndam metro network; only 60 meters.
The line has it's own depot, located near the stop "P40 Parking". At several stations metro's from the opposite direction can be passed.
In 2020, the line has been refitted for the Michelin rubber tired system, and received rolling stock, the MCV 9100 MP and MCV 9200 MP AT, replacing the second-hand SG2 units from the Rijndam metro network which have been in use thus far.
In Rijndam 2022, this line will probably be taken out to compensate for the new line T3, to improve framerate. However, a "full version", with this line still intact, is also a possible extra option.
In order to be able to make activities for the tramlines, it was needed to install ATB on the entire network (to enable AI-traffic). The use of ATB is not alien to tramlines; the tram systems in The Hague and Amsterdam also use ATB-like systems in tunnel sections for extra security. This does mean you have to keep some distance to the tram in front of you if you are traveling closely together; S-signs have been placed along the track to identify the ATB block borders, where you have to wait if the ATB goves you the "10-absoluut" signal. In the tramtunnel, at the start of the lines, and for entering single track sections, the ATB system is backed up with red/green light signals.
The tram network has serveral elements you can find in real life tramlines; streetlevel running, separate tracks in the middle or on the side of the road, single track sections, and a signalized underground section.
Tramline T1 runs between Station Rijndam Buitenvelden and Rijndam Central Station. Transfer to and from the metro network is possible at Brielselaan, Garenmarkt and Central Station.
Version 1.0 and light version: As the Central Station terminus does not have a turning loop, only bidirectional rolling stock can function on this line. This in turn enables the use of platforms on the left side of the track (in the running direction), as the trams have doors on both sides.
Version 1.1: At Rijndam Central Station, a turning loop has been build in. This will enable single direction rolling stock to be used on line T1. At Rembrandtplein, the only tramstop where doors on the left side are still required, an emergency footpath on the other side of the track has been provided in case left side doors are not available on your tram.
Version 1.2: At Rijndam Central Station, a new turning loop has been build. At Rembrandtplein, a second track has been build, to eliminate a cause for delays. A switch still allows changing direction here (with bidirectional rolling stock). At Garenmarkt, a new loop has been added to short services (CS - Garenmarkt) on line T1.
Tramline T2 runs between Ketelplein and Statenpolder. Transfer to and from the metro network is possible at Ketelplein, Ambachtslaan, Brielselaan and station Rijndam Blaak.
The platforms along line T2 have been build at 60 meters to enable coupled KTM31 trams in service. On line T1, 3xKTM23 is the longest possible formation.
Tramline T3 runs between Garenmarkt and Denia. Transfer to and from the metro network is possible at Garenmarkt, Station Blaak, Westwoud and Denia. The platforms along this line are build at 80 meters to enable coupled KTM Citylink trams in service. As this line requires the ZUB train protection system between Kanaalstraat and Denia, only the KTM Citylink, the Citadis and the K4500 can run on this line.
Between Kanaalstraat and Westwoud, line T3 can reach it's maximum speed of 100 km/h.
Tramline T4 runs between Garenmarkt and Winkelcentrum (shopping center) De Bogaard. Transfer to and from the metro network is possible at Garenmarkt and Central Station. Between Central Station and Wkc De Bogaard, line T4 uses APS power supply (Alimentation Par le Sol, literally meaning feeding via the ground). Only the Tours and Reims Citadis trams can run here.
Line T4 is available in version 1.3.
Depot Molenwijk is the main depot on the network. It is situated near the terminus Molenwijk at line M1. It has 13 sidings for stabling up to 100 SG3-type metro trains, and a 6-track maintenance facility (a new building has replaced the old one from Rijndam 1985/2016).
The depot also has three sidings for railway rolling stock, used by the RijndamRail train services. The mechanics at Depot Molenwijk can also provide small maintenance for railway rolling stock.
Depot Bergenseweg is a former freightyard near Bergenseweg metro station, connected to the metro network at Station Westplein. After the national railway company abandoned it, it has been converted for use by the Rijndam metro network (power supply by overhead whires). Three tracks have been converted to serve as stabling facility for metro trains. The other tracks are not electrified and are available for stabling track maintenance rolling stock and/or out-of-service metro trains. There is also a short section of track leading to the docks at the Rhine river.
Depot Rijndam Airport
Depot Rijndam Airport uses the site of a former underground cargo terminal. It has 4 tracks, with capacity for up to 16 SG3-type metro trains.
Depot Station Blaak
Depot Station Blaak is located at the start of line M6, just outside of the station. It has 4 tracks, with capacity for up to 16 SG3-type metro trains.
Depot Transferium Rijndijk
Depot Transferium Rijndijk consists of 2 stabling tracks directly behind the Transferium Rijndijk terminus. It is used to stable the first 2 trains (on line M2) out of this station of the day.
Depot Rijndam Megastores consists of 2 stabling tracks directly behind the Megastores terminus. It is used to stable two 3-car units for line M7.
Depot Denia, at the end of line M5, contains 2 tracks which are connected to the first platform track at station Denia. Each track is long enough for two SG3 units.
Depot Airport Shuttle
The depot for the Airport Shuttleservice is located near the stop P40 Parkinglot. It has 4 stabling tracks and 1 maintenance track, each long enough for a 60 meter long metro.
Depot Buitenvelden is the Rijndam tram depot. It is located near the Station Buitenvelden terminus along tramline T1 and T2. The depot contains 1 maintenance track and 10 stabling tracks.
Track Y1 is the maintenance track, this track is not for stabling purposes. It is not electrified, to allow safe maintenance on the tram roof and pantograph. Use other trams to shunt rolling stock to and from this track.
Tracks Y2 through Y4 are for the KTM 23.
Tracks Y5 through Y7 are for the KTM 31.
Tracks Y8 through Y11 are for the KTM Citylink.
These rolling stock allocations are important for optimum use of the tram stabling capacity; the defined stopmarkers on these tracks have been optimized for the indicated rolling stock types. The tram types are therefore also indicated next to the tracks on the CVL screen.
Railwaylines signals and security
The railway lines in the Rijndam network are equiped with Dutch railway signals and ATB-EG security.
The signs along the tracks are mostly the same as the signs used on the metro network, but there are a few differences. For example, the numbers on the blue stopsigns are in carriages of train length instead of the number of trainsets (a two-part train will stop at stopsign 2 on the railway network, where a MG2/SG2 metro will stop at stopsign 1 on the metro network).
The following signals are being used to provide information on track clearance and speed limits:
The signals are backed up by ATB-EG security, controlling the maximum speed on the line. The signals are relayed to the trains by using the tracks to create a series of electromagnetic pulses, which are recognised by the equipment on board the trains. The ATB-EG system controlls the maximum speeds 40, 60, 80 and 130 km/h.
However, the main rule remains "when more then one speed indication is given, the most restrictive one must be followed". So when signs along the track tell you the maximum speed is 100 km/h, and the ATB tells you 130, then you must keep to 100 km/h.
The metro rolling stock will display (and enforce) the highest speed they can at or below the speed they receive from the ATB-EG; for example, if the ATB-EG sends out "130 km/h", the SG3 rolling stock will display "100", and the Bursa 5200's will display "80".
Railway Sprinter service
The Railway Sprinter service (also known as "Rijndam Rail") runs from Rijndam Molenwijk trainstation to Noordvliet, via Rijndam Central station, Rijndam Westplein and Rijndam Buitenvelden, and from Rijndam Molenwijk trainstation to Rijndam south.
The Buitenvelden - Noordvliet and Rijndam Centraal - Rijndam Zuid parts will be taken out for framerate improvement (but not in the "full version", where these lines remain intact). At the cut-off points, this will be modelled as "temporary out of service for maintenance". Tickets from the metro network are also valid on the Railway Sprinter service.
Version 1.3: RR2 is extended from Rijndam Zuid to Ypenburg. The destination code stays the same.
Railway Intercity services
Starting in Rijndam 2022 V1.3, an intercity service is introduced between Rijndam Centraal Station and Rijndam Airport, via a new railway line. This is a nonstop service offering a faster connection to the airport then line M4 can provide (the line was inspired by the Heatrow Express connection, which exists as an alternative to the Picadilly subwayline in London). The service uses the Dutch Railways 1700-series locomotives and intercity carriages.
A second route for intercity services is provided (also starting in Rijndam 2022 V1.3) between Rijndam (Airport / Central Station) and Zeeburg, with an optional stop at Ypenburg. This route is for use by the TRAXX locomotive (with intercity carriages), which is in use by the Dutch Railways for intercity services using the High Speed Line (HSL, Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Breda-Belgium). So between Ypenburg and Zeeburg, an HSL has been build, using ETCS Level 1 train protection.
You can use either the TRAXX locomotive (up to 160 km/h) or the HSM (up to 200 km/h) on the HSL.
