The D78 stock trains were introduced in 1978, and replaced the CO, CP and R stock trains. In the words of TfL (Transport for London, the operator of London Underground), the D78 trains have "proven to be the most reliable rolling stock ever operated by London Underground up to date, by a large margin" (quote "Line info book, District line, August 2013").

Like the 1973 and 1995 stock trains, the D78 stock is operated in semi-permanently coupled 3-car units. Two units are coupled together to form a full 6-car train. Like the 1973 stock, most units are single ended (only one end on a unit has a driver cab), but there are a number of double-ended units (with driver cabs on both ends), which can also run as single units.
Each single ended train is made up of two three-car units, coupled together, with each unit consisting of a Driving Motor car (DM), a Trailer car (T) and an Uncoupling Non-Driving Motor car (UNDM). The six-car trains are therefore formed DM-T-UNDM+UNDM-T-DM.

A double ended unit consists of a Driving Motor car (DM), a Trailer car (T) and another Driving Motor car (DM). These are normally coupled together or to a single ended unit to form a full 6-car train, but they can be used on their own.

The most noticeable property of this type of rolling stock are the single-leaf passenger doors. This was done as a way to cut costs, but proved to be more of a disadvantage, as it slowed down passenger movements in and out of the train at stations.

As with the real trains, the Metrosimulator 'single ended' model is composed of 3-car units, each with one driver cab. Two units have to be coupled back-to-back to form a complete train. On the end of the UNDM-car (without driver cab), a small control panel is available for shunting purposes.

Like in reality, all cars carry their own numbers, even though they are permanently coupled in units of 3 cars. In the simulator, the units are identified by the number of the DM-car (in case of the double ended units, the A-side DM-car).
