If you want to make a very fast ride, just disable ATB/ZUB, put trottle to 1.00 and enjoy.

Either good or bad
Riding along on a First Doncaster Bus by day, Playing Metro Simulator and making (bad) repaints by night

I would interpret it as "It's happening, but not as fast as we all would like"

....... I suggest you take a look at Zoetermeer. A suburban city close to The Hague.
In 1977, it got a metro style heavyrail railway; a loop with 12 stations. Trains, specially designed to have high acceleration to be able to stop many times in short distances (some stations are only 500 meters apart), would run from The Hague Central Station, go to Zoetermeer, take the loop clockwise or counter clockwise, and then go back to The Hague Central Station.
Apart from the heavyrail railway rolling stock, it was in effect a metro system.

Today, it is part of the RandstadRail network, and the trains have been replaced by trams (at a higher service frequency), which change to the The Hague city tram network just before reaching The Hague Central Station, in order to go further into The Hague, providing a transfer-free connection.
(and on the Zoetermeer side; a new branch line has been build, which is currently being extended).

The trains (type SGM -> "StadsGewestelijk Materieel") which ran on the line got a renovation and are currently running as regular trains on the rest of the Dutch railway system.
